'I am proud to do blockbusters. "The Day After Tomorrow" for example, focuses on an environmental disaster. And "Jarhead" tells us of the madness of the Gulf War,"Brokeback Mountain" is about the taboo love between men, and"Love and Other Drugs" is also about the hubris of the American pharmaceutical industry.'
Choice of roles as Jake becames better known:'Sure, the danger is great. when celebrity status reaches a certain height it can become complacent and hollow. I readily admit it. But I've not fallen into this trap. I'm still burning! I still want to know. I still wear each of my films literally like my skin. I've been working without a safety net.'
'I hope that iI will never back down. I would rather be like my big idols Paul Newman, Anthony Quinn, Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando. They never sold out. And when I look at how well my sister Maggie is doing in the movie business, it suggests to me that there is also great hope.'

'I love acting, especially because of the storytelling. I'm happiest when I can be part of telling a great story. This is my drive as an artist.'
'Seeing myself on a movie poster is a limited thrill for me. (laughter). But the thrill of being able to work with fantastic actors like Heath Ledger is indescribable. Or with such a visionary young director like Duncan Jones. I was totally over the moon that he wanted to do "Source Code". I found his debut film "Moon" quite extraordinary.'

'...And daring, sometimes risking taking a wrong step creatively, yes. It's very liberating. Because it's the only way you develop further. This does not mean that I valued "Source Code" as a creative misstep-the opposite is the case. The film was a step in the right direction. I will continue to make more films like this. rather than the one that is expected of me. I'm personally and professionally in a state of transformation when almost anything can happen. This is exciting.'

Public interest in Jake as a person.: 'This whole celebrity nonsense? Sometimes I call out to people "Get a life!" But mostly I just shrug my shoulders.
If you really want, you can escape a bit from all the hype-even in Los Angeles.

Ending a relationship in public : 'True, It's not easy when a relationship ends under the magnifying glass of the media. It's bad enough even without the pictures and malicious comments. But even so I did not let them bend me. That would be really bad.'

'I have a great ambition, that everything I do looks light and loose. Just as, for example, Carly Grant and Jimmy Stewart made it look. That to me is the greatest art : to make what is heavy appear light.'

「とくに、演じる事が大好き。それは物語を語れるから。一番幸せな事は素晴らしい物語の一部として自分がいられること。これが役者としての原動力なんだ。」
「映画のポスターに写っている自分を見るのは限られた楽しみだね。（笑）でも、ヒース・レジャーのような素晴らしい俳優と仕事できる事は言葉では言い表せないほどの感激がある。もしくはダンカン・ジョーンズのような先見の明のある若い監督と共に働く事。
彼がソース・コードをやりたいって言った時、僕はほんとに大喜びしたよ。彼のデビュー作”ムーン”はまったくすこぶる素晴らしいからね。」

「。。。それから大胆に、時には間違ったステップをする事を覚悟で想像的になる。そう、とても解放的になるんだ。なぜなら、それが唯一大きくなれる方法だから。これは、”ソース・コード”が想像的失敗だったと評してる訳ではない。これとは逆の意味でこの映画は正しい方向へのステップだったと思う。こんな映画をもっと作っていきたい。むしろ期待されたものよりも。僕は個人的にも、プロフェッショナルとしても、変化の時にあると思う。どんなことも起こりうる。これはエキサイティングだよ。」

ジェイク個人として興味を持たれるのは？「すべての有名人にとってナンセンスかな？時々僕は人々に叫びたくなるんだ、”楽しもうよ!”でもたいていの場合肩をすくめるだけだけどね。もし本当に全ての誇大広告から逃れようと思うなら出来るはず。たとえロサンゼルスにいてもね。」

破局報道について。「本当にメディアの拡大鏡の元では破局を迎えるのはしんどいこと。写真や悪意のあるコメントがなくても、十分に悪いよ。それでも、自分が曲がって伝えられるような報道は許してこなかった。それはさらに最悪だからね。」
「僕には大きな野望がある。全ての物事を軽くゆるく見るようにする事。例えばキャリー・グラントやジミー・スチュワートのように。それは僕にとって偉大なアートなんだ。重たい物を軽く表わす事。」

Jake responded to the question of whether he could relate to Colter's particular little problem.
'It happened to me once that I fell asleep on a plane and when I woke up, at first I had no idea where I was. I was convinced that i went to sleep in my own bed, then suddenly, in some inexplicable way i found myself in another place. I remember that a thousand  ideas passed through my head of what could happened. Was I dead? Kidnapped by a UFO? Was I teleported? Of course, I remembered everything soon enough, and the nightmare was over. When I read "Source Code", I could guess right away how Colter Stevens felt, waking up in the train. But in his case, the nightmare has only just begun.'

'As a farmer who stands with a pitchfork and throws around the pig manure (Laughs). Talking seriously, I have no idea. Life consists of so many unpredictable elements that you can not answer the questions : "Where I would be today if i would have take a different decision ten years ago?"
However, it seems to me that I wouldn't be working in another profession. I like it too much. I'd be doing everything possible to continue to be an actor.'

ジェイクはコルター（ソース・コードの主人公）の持つ特定の小さい問題に感情移入出来たかどうかと言う問いに答えた。
「一度僕にも起こったんだ。飛行機の中で眠って、目覚めた時、始めは自分がどこにいるのかわからなかった。自分のベッドで寝たと信じきっていて突然不可解に別の場所で自分を見つけたんだ。僕は覚えている。何が起こったのか、いろんな考えが頭をよぎったよ。　僕は死んでしまったのか？
　ＵＦＯに拉致されたのか？　テレポテーションしたのか？　もちろん全てをじきに思い出したよ。で、この悪夢は終了した。”ソース・コード”を読んだ時コルター・スティーブンスが電車の中で目覚めてどう感じたか直ちにわかったよ。でも、彼の場合、悪夢は始まっただけなんだけどね。」

農夫としてくまでを持ち、あたりの豚の肥料（糞）をかき集める。（笑）まじめな話、僕にはわからない。人生は沢山の予測できない要素から成り立っている。この質問には答えられない。
”もし１０年前に異なった決断をしていたら、今日の自分はどこにいるのか？”
けれど、僕にとっては別の職業を選んでいたとは思えない。僕はこれがとても好きなんだ。俳優を続けるためならなんだってやれるよ。」

"For me, it's all about discovery." said Gyllenhaal.

’ＭＡＮ　ＶＳ　ＷＩＬＤ　は予測不可能で容赦ない母なる自然の中でジレンホールがどのように期待に添えるかテストした。２日にわたってベアとジェイクは忘れられない体験をする。
山々に支配されたアイスランドの風景、巨大な氷河とヨーロッパの最も活動的な活火山へ。
ジェイクは前代未聞の悪いコンディションの中で上手く対処するためにベアの行くところには必ず行かなければいけないし、ベアの口にするものは何でも食べなければならないし、時には先頭に立たなければいけなかった。
「僕にとって、全てが発見だったよ。」


Said Bear about the experience, "The wild is always very revealing - not only physically but mentally. You've got to smile when it's driving horizontal hail and be able to face your fears and just get on and do it. and on both of those accounts, Jake came up strong."'

この体験についてベアは、「自然はいつも明らかにしてしまう。体力的なことだけでなく、精神面をも。地平線まで広がるの氷の上で活動する時、恐怖に直面しても微笑んでやり遂げなければならない。この理由からジェイクはより強くなる。」と語った。

I would love to post some snippets from two articles and  try to translate into Japanese.
However my English is poor. :p
One of them is the interview with Jake Gyllenhnaal from Germany magazine SUBWAY (27May 2011).
The other one is interview from Scotsman.com (22 March 2011).
These are not new, but i think both interviews are not less than interesting to read still now.

Tricky films seem your passion? : 'I find such material very attractive. At that time in "Donnie Darko" every day of filming began with questions : "What are we doing today?","What happened yesterday?", "Have I already this guy?", Such questions lead to the ongoing development of a story. I like that a lot.'
癖のある映画が好みですか?
「そういった題材に惹かれます。ドニー・ダーコを撮影している時、毎日が『今日は何をするんだろう？』から始まるんだ。　『昨日は何が起こった？』　『僕はすでにこの男になってるか？』　こんな疑問がストーリーを進め続けていくんだ。僕はとっても気に入ってる。」

How easy is it for you to find such projects? 'Strangely, it has become very difficult to produce short films. A cheap project with a budget of under five million dollars is far more difficult to realise than a movie that is twice as expensive. That sounds pretty crazy, but that's the reality in Hollywood.'
こんなプロジェクトを見つける事はたやすいですか？
「奇妙な事に、短い映画ほど難しくなる。低予算、５ミリオンドル以下のような物をプロデュースする事はその倍の額のものより実現するのが難しいんだ。ホントにクレイジーだけどね。でもこれがハリウッドの現実なんだ。」

You were a candiate for "Spider-Man","Batman" and "Superman" - are you happy in retrospect that the  commercial popcorn heroes passed you by? 'I have absolutely nothing against these movies. They have huge success, which is certainly due to the quality of the directors. For me the difference is always whether someone simply makes a very expensive film or a film that has a premonition. Entertainment also has an obligation : it must tell intelligent stories. therefore, Duncan was the perfect director for the perfect big budget film.'
あなたはスパイダーマン、バットマンそしてスーパーマンの候補に選ばれていましたが、宣伝用ポップコーンヒーローとして名が通る事は嬉しいですか？
「これらの映画に対して決して反対意見は無い。巨大な成功を収めているしそれは監督の資質によるものだと思う。僕にとっての違いはいつでも、単にとても高額な映画を作るのか、警告を含んでいるかどうかかなんだ。　エンターテイメントには気のきいたストーリーを語る義務もあると思う。だから、ダンカンは完璧な大規模予算映画において完璧な監督だったと思う。」

How important is the balancing act between art and commerce to you? 'To me that's not important. (laughs) In the end it doesn't matter how big a project - as long as the story is right, a film also finds it's audieence. I had this experience with "Brokeback Mountain" as well as with "Donnie Darko" - which at start broke no records, but in the long run, was highly successful.'
芸術性と商業性のバランスはどのように大事ですか？

Does Jake take a film like prince of Persia as seriously as Source Code? 'Absolutely! I take all my roles very seriously, always. When I play a character, then it means everything to me - otherwise I could not work at all.'

Wouldn't you like to act once again with Maggie? 'Why not? However, We've never talked about it much, we talk about family matters, But it would certainly be tempting to act together again in the theater.'

IT USED to be that one of the most difficult jobs for an interviewer in Hollywood was trying to crack Jake Gyllenhaal. Never churish or rude, he simply gave the impression of being politely, perpetually jet-lagged during press conversations.

This reached a nadir of sorts when he paired up with Peter Sarsgaard for their Jarhead interview five tyears ago. The two actors seemed to be running a private competition to see who could say the least, and at the lowest volume.
最もそれが顕著だったのは、ピーター・サースガードとペアでジャーヘッドのインタビューを受けている５年前のことであった。この二人の俳優はどちらがしゃべらずにいるか、そして控えめな声でいるかを競っているかのようにように見えた。

Lately however, Gyllenhaal says, he's resolved "stop taking myself so seriously" after discovering that even othe actors had the Donnie Darko actor pegged as enigmatic reserved and rather unapproachable.

Gyllenhaal's right. he can be amussing in a self-deprecating way, but when he solemnly assures you that his Prince of Persia physique was mostly the result of maintaining the character's shoulder length hair ("shanpoo AND conditioner - that works out biceps AND triceps") it doesn't always translate into print.

He turned 30 a few month ago and with the current crop of male superstars - Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Matt Damon- now in their 40s, studios are looking for younger talent to step up and join Lepnardo Dicaprio on the next -A list.

Anyone who's been following Gyllenhaal from his teenage breakthrough in Donnie Darko to three-hankie weepies (Brokeback Mountain) and eco-blockbusters (The Day After Tomorrow) can certify that he's determined to be an actor of range.

"I saw a lot of my contemporaries having a good time." admits Gyllenhaal, whose recent girlfriend Reese Witherspoon has now starred in so many romcoms that she seems onthe way to being Julia Roberts 2.0, while his brother in law Peter Sarsgaard has been playing the supervillain in last summer's Knight And Day and the upcoming Green Lautern.
"Audiences definitely want to see big entertainment. It's not a fun time for a lot of people, and right now they want to go out to the cinema and have a good time."

Love and Other Drugs and Prince of Persia may have failed to elevate him to Hollywood royalty last year, but the upcoming Source Code is altogether more promising. British director Duncan Jones won a Bafta last year ffor his smart, confident sci-fi drama, Moon, and since Source Code premiered in Texas this week, it's been hailed as this year's Inception.

There are similarities beween Source Code and Moon. Both films have the air of an excellent Twilight Zone episode, and both play around with identity. Gyllenhaal is an air force captain who wakes up in the body of a stranger who appears to be on his daily train journy to work. Eight minutes later the train blows up, and Gyllenhaal finds himself back in his own body being quizzed about the experience. And at first, he's as confused as we are.

"Duncan sent me lots of different videos, and one of them was pilots in pilot training school, doing G-force training in a simulator." says Gyllenhaal. "It's actually pretty funny because a lot of them lose consciousness, come to, and don't know what happened. This is a similar experience. He comes to, wondering if he's hallucinating."

「これは本当に面白い。彼らの多くは気を失って、意識を取り戻した時は何が起こったのか解っていないんだ。これは似たような経験だよ。彼が意識を取り戻した時これは幻覚かと疑う事とね。」

Gyllenhaal has been acting since he was a child. "I grew up around movie sets, so you end up feeling comfortable in that context." he says. "But at the same time, I hardly ever sleep the first night befor shooting. I always think I'm going to forget all the thing I've rehearsed and prepared."
